The Opening of Melaka Food Bank by Hatten & Kechara

March 15th, 2019 : Millions of people around the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy and active life. That is about 1 in 9 people on earth. Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under the age of five each year. This is an estimated 3.1 million children every year. Asia is the continent with the largest number of people suffering from hunger. About 2 thirds of the total population to be exact.

Meanwhile, one third of all food produced goes to waste – that’s enough to feed all of the world’s hungry and malnourished a few times over!

“There are genuinely sufficient resources in the world to ensure that no one, nowhere, at no time, should go hungry.” Ed Asner

Hatten knows the intense measures of this troubling situation. Whilst we may not be able to feed the whole world, we can surely collaborate with those of like minds and hearts to reach out and feed those around us who are in need of a better quality lifestyle.

With this being said, Hatten is honoured to be able to collaborate with Kechara, a non-governmental organisation that is well-known for its food distribution network that also offers various types of assistance to the less privileged as well as single mothers and elderly folk. Hence, we are proud to announce that together, we have set up the Kechara Food Bank in Melaka to source surplus food from hotels, restaurants and shopping malls to distribute it to the urban poor.

We would like to extend our warmest appreciation to YB Ginie Lim Siew Lin (EXCO of Women, Welfare and Rural Development), for gracing the event with her congenial presence. It was a delightful celebration presented with a few words from YB Ginie, Dato’ Colin Tan of Hatten and Mr Justin Cheah of Kechara followed by the opening being officiated with plague signing, ribbon cutting and rationing of food and groceries to those in need. Studies have shown and we have indeed experienced the fact that the joy of giving most certainly overpowers the joy of getting. For Hatten, we continue to constantly seek for ways to contribute to the local community through our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Hatten Cares.
